Top Ten Tips To Save Energy in Your Home

Here are some simple ways you can stop wasting energy and money now.

Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent and typically saves around £50 per year. If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time.
Is your water too hot? Your cylinder thermostat should be set at 60°C/140°F.
Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows and check for draughts around windows and doors.
Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Don’t leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave laptops and mobile phones on charge unnecessarily.
If possible, fill up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher: one full load uses less energy than two half loads.
Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you’re using an electric kettle).
A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they’re fully turned off!
Use energy saving lightbulbs. They last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs, and using one can save you around £45 over the lifetime of the bulb. This saving could be around £70 over its lifetime if you’re replacing a high wattage incandescent bulb, or one used for more than a few hours a day.
Do a home energy check. Just answer some simple questions about your home and we’ll give you a free, impartial report telling you how you can save up to £250 a year on your household energy bills.

Protection Against Rising Damp and Penetrative Damp

Eurocote can help you treat and stop rising damp with this unique secoSAN system.

Rising damp occurs from moisture penetration that is characterized by a tide mark on the lower section of the affected wall. This is caused by soluble salts which are contained in the ground water. The most common symptoms of rising damp include;

  • Plaster and paint deterioration
  • Wall paper coming away from the walls
  • Salt stains appearing on the walls
  • Mortar and plaster can fall away from the affected area
  • Musty smell can appear
  • Mold growth

Untreated rising damp can also cause respiratory illnesses for the home owners and failure to treat rising damp can result in a house that is unpleasant to live in or difficult to sell.

Protect your home from rising damp with the secoSAN system, a unique nanoGel formula designed with the highest technology to eliminate rising damp.

This is NOT a D.I.Y. product and cannot be bought retail!

The secoSAN revolutionary nanoGel is especially designed for keeping your walls dry, increasing its thermal efficiency and helping to create a dry interior where less energy is required for heating.

secoTHERM water repellent masonry creme improves thermal resistance and prevents penetrating damp

Eurocote brings you the latest products to help you protect and improve your home.

You can protect multiple surfaces like brick, stone and concrete from rain and damp penetration for up to 20 years.

This is NOT a D.I.Y. product and cannot be bought retail!

Many Governments in Europe have set targets to reduce carbon emission from houses. It is a fact that 35% of heat lost through in European hosing stock goes through the walls. Many homes have solid brick or stone walls which are difficult to insulate and when these walls get wet through rain penetration they become less effective at keeping heat in. Cavity wall insulation is not possible in many types of construction and internal insulation can be impractical and can take up on valuable space. External insulation can be costly and unattractive.

For those properties where cavity insulation is installed many home owners will not realize that once this insulation becomes wet, the insulation values become dramatically reduced. Scientific studies have shown that wet bricks transfer heat twice as quickly as dry bricks resulting in higher energy bills.

A secoTHERM application creates dry walls and promotes an internal barrier so heat can’t escape as readily and further more a second coat will increase the appearance and look of your masonry by creating a self-cleaning surface that will protect against dirt, pollution, damp, and UV light degradation.

The benefits are as follows;

  • Improves thermal efficiency of the masonry by keeping it dry (energy saving up to 29%)
  • Maintaining thermal properties of cavity wall insulation
  • Reduces heat loss
  • Self cleaning surface
  • Slow ageing or break down
  • Less susceptible to the growth of microorganisms

Energy Saving Grants

The UK Government schemes provide funding to households on certain benefits to improve their heating and energy efficiency.

In England the scheme is known as Warm Front.

Please note that due to high levels of demand the Warm Front Scheme is currently unable to accept new applications until after 1st of April 2011. Further information can be found on the DirectGov website.

Although Warm Front is the main scheme for replacement heating systems, there may be other local schemes available. Call your local advice centre who may be aware of any such local schemes on 0800 512 012.

For insulation measures, there are still plenty of schemes available, which may be free if you are over 70 or in receipt of benefit.

The eligibility criteria for the schemes differ between countries – with some schemes you need to be in receipt of certain benefits, whilst others are available to anyone over a certain age. Full details can be found via Warm Front . Note that grants levels may vary.

Energy Suppliers

The Government’s Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC) has been replaced by the Carbon Emission Reduction Target (CERT) this means energy suppliers with a certain number of customers operating in Great Britain are obliged to achieve targets for improving home energy efficiency. The suppliers therefore provide a range of offers which significantly reduce the cost of installing energy efficiency measures. What’s ore, you can take up offers from any of the energy companies regardless of who supplies your gas and electricity.

Local Authorities

Most local authorities provide grants and offers for local residents to install certain energy efficiency measures in their home.
